The main objective of the festival is to maintain, preserve, and promote cumbia chorrerana, which is the main and most representative folk manifestation of the La Chorrera district. During the festival, a folk parade, a night stroll, and contests that highlight various manifestations of Chorrera folklore are held, among which stand out: contest of cumbia drum players (the main instrument in the performance of cumbia chorrerana), accordionists contest, cumbia singers contest, Chorrera pollerín contest, bollo preñado making contest, children's accordion contest, children's singer contest, as well as eating and drinking contests of bollo and chicheme.
The National Festival of Cumbia Chorrerana was born in 2007, one year after the physical passing of the foremost exponents of cumbia chorrerana, Ñato Califa, Chía Ureña, and the members of their ensemble.
